first and only match -- hard and fast paced for me. the comp itself was poorly run and annoying to just have one guy in my division, but the match was great and I appreciate the experience.

Here's the semifinal match...a tough one for me, as I dislocated a rib about two minutes in (withdrew afterwards). Patience and trickery saved the day though (with 9 seconds to spare!), as you'll see at the end...anklelock, toehold, kneebar, toehold, kneebar, voila!

the veggie steambuns were calling to me, but I had to remain strong; the class was going to start in less than an hour, and I didn't want a repeat of the "kyoto hurl" on my hands.

left in the alley, up the stairs to the third floor...end of the hall...and there through the window was a class full of gi-glad jiujitsuists in deep meditation, no doubt praying to the tripple dieties of strength, technique and sensitivity.

actually, it was the end of a somethingorother kungfu class, but the jiujitsu started soon enough. unlike kyoto, where we were told "only sparring today!" anytime we tried to drill, this was a full on class w/ lots of instruction and I learned a lot.

when I get home, remind me to go over my new tricks:

1) twister-roll as a guard pass (think summersault to outside while in loose halfguard!)
2) 'invisible choke' from inside halfguard
3) ankle-lock polish (news to me but maybe not to aaron)
4) omoplata finish WITHOUT posting leg to outside! (A and B variations, killer!)
5) kneebar from twister-side when bottom man is blocking mount
6) kneebar from open guard/x guard when passing man is standing

travelling is good yet I miss you guys...stay sharp! 6 more weeks and I'm back!

5 blue belts, a purple and 2 browns jumped me from all sides, barely holding me down...while the professional shooto accadamy boxer came and had his way with me...

well, ok, they came one at a time...but they did all get a piece of me in the end. fantastic roll at the kyoto dojo (thanks taku!)...unfortunately they're closing until the new year and won't open again until I'm gone for china.

...and to give even more perspective, although I was getting tapped left, right and center, I also did my share of submitting. couldn't touch the brown belt, but he didn't get me either...and I was 2:1 with the blue belts...they'd get 2 for every one of mine, that is...lost count in the end.

all was good except for the vomit; I ate too much dinner and had to purge myself after the first 3 rolls...they set quite a pace! 5 minutes on, 1 minute rest...repeat...some guys tried to break off and do some drilling, but the instructor said "no, today is sparring only!"

I'm feeling it today...especially my neck...perhaps from when mr. shooto (think garuda + brown belt) got me in a poorly angled rear naked choke and I refused to tap...yet no real injuries, and my thirst has been stoked!

we forgot the camera battery, otherwise I'd post some pics ;(

how can anything legal be this much fun?

finally converted the garage into a dojo... a big step up from the living room!

we've actually added even more mats now... enough for two pairs to grapple at the same time...and errands added some standup training equipment as well (heavy bag, freaky-dodge bag)...
